Xionggu's Curved-Surface Welding Robot Overcomes the Ship Hull “Curved-Surface Blind Spot“ Challenge

Release Date: Sep 17, 2026

Recently, it was learned from Jiangnan Shipyard that a curved-surface welding robot jointly developed with Xionggu's participation successfully overcame the headache-inducing "curved-surface blind spot" problem in ship hull construction. Faced with uneven ship hull curved surfaces, cramped cabins, and high-altitude operations, welding was previously done entirely by welders relying on feel for "blind welding," which was not only highly labor-intensive but also made quality difficult to guarantee. Now, this welding expert with "intelligent eyes" has officially arrived—relying on a magnetic adsorption chassis, it can move across curved steel plates as easily as walking on flat ground without the need to lay tracks.

Through its onboard laser vision system, it possesses the superpower of "active pathfinding," enabling it to identify weld seam trajectories in real time and guide them correctly; combined with parameter models generated from massive amounts of accumulated backend data, welders only need to select the corresponding "process package" and can view weld images and parameters at a glance through a wireless remote control. What used to be a craft dependent on the experience of veteran workers has become "standardized operation" that is data-controllable and reproducible.

In large curved-surface panel joining scenarios, this "robot welder" increases construction efficiency by about 20%, greatly reduces workers' labor intensity, and ensures stable quality.

Relevant departments of Jiangnan Research Institute worked closely together, sorted out application scenarios, conducted equipment research, and jointly developed the system with Xionggu. At present, prototype development and process research have been completed, and related process qualification work has been completed under the witness of ship surveyors, obtaining classification society approval. After pilot application on selected curved-surface blocks of actual ships, the weld formation was good, with no need for rework or grinding, and the non-destructive testing pass rate of the pilot block welds reached 100%!

From "blind welding by feel" to "data-controllable and reproducible," the joint development by Xionggu and Jiangnan Shipyard is providing a more efficient and more stable intelligent solution for curved-surface welding in shipbuilding.
